One of the most important things a person can do when she is looking for a plumber is to make sure that the person is a licensed plumber. There are some companies that will operate without a license, which is not legal, and is also a set up for disaster in the long run. Types of Licensing

Tradesman licenses are limited, since the plumber has only completed his plumbing school and four thousand hours under a Journeyman or Master plumber during his apprenticeship. For larger jobs, an individual needs to be sure that the plumber is licensed at least at the Journeyman level. A licensed Master plumber is the highest licensing level for a plumber, other than going on to become a plumbing inspector. If a plumber is licensed at a Master level, it means that he worked as a Journeyman plumber for at least a year under a Master plumber before being eligible for the Master plumbing exam. This exam has many of the same features as the Journeyman exam, except it also adds a plumbing system planning section where the plumber has to design the plans for a multi-story building’s plumbing system.

An individual can find out whether a plumber is licensed by talking to the company directly and asking specific questions about the different types of licenses for plumbers. He can also look at the company’s website and often find the licensing information, since reputable companies want clients to be sure they are getting quality service.

It turns out that there was more wrong with the recent US housing cycle than just bad loans and predatory lenders. It has recently come to light that many homeowners are experiencing Chinese drywall problems that are making them sick and destroying what they paid so much to build.

Some people estimate that as much as half of a billion pounds of toxic drywall was shipped into the US from China during the boom. This is a major problem, as now people are reporting the smell of sulfur emanating from that drywall. Would we expect anything more from the country that brought us toxic toothpaste and over-leaded kids’ toys? But this looks like it could be a much more far-ranging conflict than those isolated incidents.

The first consumer complaints came from the state of Florida, where not surprisingly much of the fake real estate boom occurred. A lot of home construction was performed in the USA with inexpensive drywall imported from China that was defective.

There have also been complaints about further Chinese drywall problems coming out of other southern states such as North Carolina, most recently. Some people have speculated that this is because the warm climate activates the toxicity within the drywall and releases its stench.

Poor quality coal from Chinese mines probably has contributed to the defective Chinese drywall issues. The truth is not known, but some believe it is likely that waste ash from these mines was transported over to drywall factories, where it was then mixed into the ultimate end-product.

Some people are demanding that their Congress do something about this. Tensions in the US have risen as it seems that every couple of months a new story comes out about how China’s “relaxed” labor standards have led to some sort of poison being in US imported products.

Overall, it is simply a sad problem because not only are people subject to living in the midst of this filth (which they paid for), but some are even ending up in hospitals. These people report a shortness of breath, head pains, and multiple other effects related to the fact that their drywall is rotting their pipes and stinking up their living rooms. China should really pay for this if you ask me. But maybe this is just what you get when you try to get any product for too cheap.

If you think that you might be suffering from this specific type of bad drywall, ask yourself when your house was built. Check up on when your most recent wall-work was done. If it was done within the last five or ten years then you may want to think about doing something. There are lawyers who are already starting to take up actions where they can, and Congress is getting on top of things. The problem has only recently been discovered, so we’ll see how things progress from here.

Build an Outdoor Pizza Oven

Step 1: Set Up the Oven Base

Begin by prepping the area for the installation, providing a level space and following any special instructions or precautions that come with the kit. With the location prepped, set up the oven base according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Place the oven frame and component frames in the desired location. Allow the front edge of the lower oven base to overhang the oven frame by 1 inch. Secure the oven base to the frame with screws.

Step 2: Begin to Brick the Fireplace

Using a basic mortar mix of sand, concrete and water, set up one row of bricks around the perimeter to secure the base. Then lay a course of bricks “soldier style” under the oven components and each lower door. Continue bricking the front, making certain that the grout lines are about 1/2" thick (Image 1).

 

Step 3: Attach the Arches

Attach the lower stone arches, following the oven frame as a guide. The bricks adjacent to the stone arches may need to be custom cut for proper fit (Image 1). Continue bricking around the rest of the base, making certain to leave the rear mesh-covered ventilation areas open.

 

Step 4: Add the Top of the Oven

Place the top portion of the oven on the base and secure with screws, making certain that the tabs on the side of the oven base fit in the underside slots of the oven dome. Attach the stone arch above the oven door on the arched templates, using high-temperature, weather-resistant caulk. Mortar the joints between the stones for a uniform look (Image 1).

 

Step 5: Attach the Chimney

Attach the oven chimney, securing it with screws. Attach the doors per the instructions in the kit. To finish, install countertop surfaces of your choice. If using concrete countertops, you may stain the countertops, if desired.
