collectible lamps

Posted On February 16th, 2009 by admin.

Antique Lamps have become very collectible over the past few years. Certain styles such as Art Deco and Victoriana have assisted this popularity along with certain makers such as Tiffany that will never go out of fashion.

Some of the most collectible lamps  are oil and kerosene lamps. They can still look as beautiful and stylish today as they did 100 years ago when they were first manufactured. There is something romantic about these lamps when they are lit and show off their glow to perfection in even the most uninspiring rooms.

Be very careful when purchasing lamps with glass shades. This is the place where most of the damage is done. Slight burn marks are normal and should be accepted with any lamp with an age. Run your fingers around the rim of the shade very carefully and check for hairline cracks.

Be also very careful when purchasing supposed Antique Lamps due to the number of reproductions on the market. Where a certain area is very popular as it is with Antique Lamps then it is just a matter of time before the market is flooded with reproduction pieces.

collectible lamps

This does not mean that reproduction antique lamps are a bad thing. If you do have an original piece which has a slightly damaged shade it would be easy to replace this with a reproduction if it was for your own use and not for resale.

The only problems come when the reproduction lamps are passed on as originals either by unsuspecting sellers or by unscrupulous dealers. Check the lamps like you would any other antique. Look for normal wear and tear on the shade. Brass fittings would be worn away due to frequent use along with the base. Owners would often polish the lamps so this would also show on a genuine antique lamp. If you suspect anything regarding the lamps true age then don’t buy it.

modern lamps

Interior lighting in a home often consists of built in light fixtures and go on and off with the flick of a switch as well as lamps. Lamps can give your decor a homey look. You can use lamps as a way to dictate the type of interior decor that you want in your home. Following are some ideas for lamp designs.

 Hi-Tech, Ultra Modern Lamps

You have most likely seen the very modern, sleekly designed lamps that are featured in stores as well as online. These lamps come in all shapes and sizes and usually have metal bases. You can find ultra modern desk lamps as well as floor lamps. They go very well if you are trying to achieve a very contemporary look in your home.

Designer Lamps

modern lamps

Designer lamps are created by those who specialize in light design for homes. They often bear a design that is signature for the individual designer. If you are looking for something chic and high end, you may want to consider getting designer lamps. They are available for all types of decor.

Tiffany-style Lamps

Tiffany lamps are a classic style that features cut glass of various colors. They can have either a metal or wooden base. Mock Tiffany lamps were in vogue in the 1970s, but today you will see more authenticated lamps in stores that sell lights and supplies. Tiffany lamps are timeless elegance and are perfect for a more traditional home.

Ceramic Lamps

Ceramic lamps are made with a ceramic base and can feature a special design or be very plain. Ceramic lamps have been in style for the past 60 years, although the style of the ceramic has changed throughout the years. Because lamps are so easy to make and really only need a light kit, you can even create your own ceramic base for your lamp.

Floor Lamps

Floor lamps are those that have a base on the floor. They are used in offices as well as homes and can feature both traditional as well as modern decor. Many people prefer floor lamps to desk lamps because they are more versatile as they do not require a table on which to sit.

One way that you can use lamps to create a more cozy atmosphere in your home is to change the lamp shades. Custom lamp shades are not very costly and, with a little creativity, you can even make them yourself.

No matter what type of lamp or shade you choose, make sure that you try to stay consistent with the entire lighting design throughout the house to achieve a more pulled together look.

For several years, hurricane lamps were popular. With their large, blown-glass base, these lamps were popular before electricity, because their shape prevented the wind from extinguishing the flames from an oil or gas lit candle. Modern hurricane lamps are available to be used with votive lights, tower candles and even with real light bulbs. Shopping for a modern hurricane lamp is easy, and they look great with a beaded vintage lamp shade.

Some people  choose to use antique lamps  when they want to recreate or just remind themselves of Grandma’s house. Depending upon when you grew up, you might just want to pick up a set of those green or gold glass lamps. Popular from the 1940′s and 50′s when electricity was widely available, and technology was celebrated, these lamps have vibrant colors and patterns. You might want to take it to an electrician for a wiring update and a safety inspection. They can replace the bulb receptacle with an approved modern one and remove the old wiring in favor of newer wiring, without damaging the appearance of the lamp. Recreating special memories can be a safe and enjoyable way to relax.

Antique floor lamps are also beautiful, they can come in a stained glass style, like Tiffany lamp, or in one of many other styles. Reproductions are available, but are often made with different materials. Plastics and other composite materials that are widely available now were not available in the past and so you’re more likely to find metals, in a variety of finishes, rather than plastics. Lamp base styles were often of carved wood, metals, molded and hand-blown glass. Beaded Victorian lampshades go great with most antique lamps.

Whether you’ve chosen to go with an antique hurricane lamp, a vintage floor-standing Tiffany lamp, or a hanging lamp or even just vintage accent lamps, the distinctive styles of the old days will bring something special to your home. You can find antique lamps, reconditioned, from online vendors, you can also find reproductions. Keep your eyes open at Grandma’s house, in old pictures and at second hand stores, for just the perfect antique lamp for your home.

Iridescent stained glass

Posted On February 16th, 2009 by admin.

Iridescent stained glass …beautiful designs…deep, rich colors…these are some of the ways to describe the ever popular Tiffany lamps that bring unique beauty into our homes. These lamps have had their very own style through the seventies and are still today considered fashionable by many people. These brightly colored lamps give a room a surprise burst of color in a room when they are placed beside a bed, on a wall, or in a dining room.

Created by Louis Comfort Tiffany, these lamps can be used in any or every room of your home to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Tiffany loved the rich jewel colors of blood red and blues found in the Byzantium mosaics. He was able to find a way of adding the color to his glass (so it was actually in the glass) instead of having to paint it on at the end. He began by using discarded glass pieces from stained glass panels to create unique designs. The Tiffany lampshades were then created by fitting hand cut glass pieces into copper foil enclosures. Since copper is very strong, he was able to design unusual and beautiful shades for his lamps.

Iridescent stained glass

Tiffany ceiling lights are excellent for lighting up an entire room. Many sizes and styles of these lamps are available for the bedside table, desks, and buffets. Wall sconces with these unique colors and designs are also available for a different look in an entryway or to decorate a half bath by placing on one either side of the mirror. There are even styles that give ample light above your billiard table and look classy at the same time. Tiffany floor lamps are perfect for those spaces that are smaller, but are in need of a good light source. The chandeliers are beautiful in a formal dining room, but can also look attractive in a simpler dining area with a rustic decor. Wisteria blossoms, lily designs, the sun and moon, dragonflies and peacock feathers are designs often found in Tiffany lamps and can be matched to country dcor or a more elegant home design. During the daylight hours, these pretty lamps serve as an ornamental piece, and then at night it can add warmth and a bit of magic to your home. At night, these lamps can reflect diamond shaped or coin shaped designs against your wall, adding a coziness to the room. Reading by these styles of lamps is wonderful since they have a bright, yet soft, light, which is easier on the eyes. Many Tiffany lamps have stylish bases that are curved like a swan’s neck or remind you of a flower stem. Simpler lamp bases are often made with a mahogany bronze finish to further compliment the hues of greens, plum violet, merlot, and gold in many of the tiffany lampshades. Wrought iron is another stunning accent to some Tiffany lamps.

These colorful and distinctive lamps can be placed in a kitchen, a recreation room, a dining room, a bedroom, a living room, a finished basement or even a bathroom and each area will appear more inviting. Many people say they like these unique lamps because add a touch of elegance and class to their homes’ dcor and can match or compliment almost any color in their home.

reproduction tiffany lamps

Louis Comfort Tiffany, the son of the founder Charles Lewis Tiffany of Tiffany and Co. jewelers was born in New York City and first launched their business in 1878. With a combination of skills and craftsmanship in painting, interior design, traveler, photographer, collector, manufacture and artistic gardener, Tiffany had an unlimited range and versatility when it came to art.

Tiffany always appreciated fine art and wanted to carry on that appreciation through his stained-glass work. Tiffany used pieces of discarded glass from  production of the stained glass windows  and recycled them by fitting hundreds of hand-cut glass shapes into bronze and copper foil enclosures, designing gorgeous lamps of all shapes, sizes, styles and colors which included the nautilus, dragonfly and Tyler scroll. An exquisite addition to any area in your home, Tiffany lamps not only illuminates your room but also acts as a centerpiece of art.

As it says in company history, Tiffany met

up with Thomas Edison in 1885 and developed decorative stage lighting as well as electrical fixtures to complete the Tiffany lamps. After patenting four new types of incompatible glass including Favrile-glass, the exclusive Tiffany team of designers and craftsmen continued to create beautiful works of art in the glass window and lighting industry.

In 1913 the Tiffany Company introduced a new kind of glass, Tiffany linen-fold, which is used exclusively for lampshades. It was then that Louis C. Tiffany retired from active participation in his company, but retains title of President

Tiffany lamps have been categorized by various geometric characteristics including the irregular upper and lower borders lamps, favrile lamps, geometric lamps, transition to flowers, flowered cone lamps, flowered globe and irregular lower border lamps.

Today you can purchase beautiful Tiffany ceiling fixtures, floor and table lamps, stained glass-widows and wall sconces to decorate your home in an ornate and stylish way that will definitely impress anyone who enters your rooms. Other styles to choose from include, American Flag designs, Pansy, Peacock, Jeweled Geometric Iris, Jasmine, Garden, Fleur D’Lis, Cabbage Rose and ‘Animal designs of lighting.

Although Tiffany died at age 85 in 1933, the memorable and unique designer Tiffany name lives on through decorating a number of private homes and public spaces for stars like Mark Twain, Cornelius Vanderbilt and the US Presidential White House and will continue to decorate homes for years to come. tiffany style stained glass

Posted On February 16th, 2009 by admin.

Many people attribute the  popular stained glass  artwork style found in lamps, windows and other items to a man named Louis Comfort Tiffany who lived between 1848 and 1933. He was an American artist and designer whose name is synonymous with the Art Nouveau era. Tiffany was a painter and interior decorator. He promoted the copper foil method of stained glass that is so popular today. He is widely credited for the popularity of this method and it carries his name. His company made lamps, windows, doors, jewelry, metalwork, ceramics, blown glass mosaics, etc. Louis Comfort Tiffany founded the Tiffany Glass Company in 1885 but it no longer exists. His father, Charles Lewis Tiffany, previously had started a jewelry store named Tiffany & Co. in 1837.

However, stained glass artwork has a much longer and relatively unknown history. Stained glass panels have been found that are nearly 2,000 years old. Single stained glass panels were discovered in the remains of ancient Pompeii which was destroyed in a volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius around 79 A.D. Many artifacts that were found in the ruins of Pompeii are in museums around the world especially in Naples, Italy.

Stained glass like we are familiar with was also used in religious settings as early as 11 A.D. in Europe.

tiffany hanging lamps

Posted On February 16th, 2009 by admin.

If you’re looking for a lighting option to add a touch of class, style and sophistication to any setting, look no further than an exquisite new Tiffany style lamp. This American classic features a shade made of pieces of stained glass, soldered together to form ornate scenes or abstract motifs. The base of most Tiffany lamps is solid metal and is often ornately decorated as well.

Designer Louis Comfort Tiffany crafted the first Tiffany lamp in New York in 1899 in his studio where he had devoted himself to working with glass. The Tiffany lamp is widely considered America’s greatest contribution to the Art Nouveau movement, which began and flourished in Europe in the late 19th century. This ubiquitous light fixture was born when Tiffany started using the scraps and discarded pieces from larger projects to fashion his decorative lamp shades.

Today, Tiffany style lamps are produced by practically every major lighting company, each with their own spin on Louis Comfort Tiffany’s original stroke of genius. The first Tiffany lamps were small to midsized table lamps, as are many of the Tiffany styles today. There is certainly no shortage of colors and base options today. There are  Tiffany style lamps  to match any color scheme and dcor, from the staunchest traditionalist to the most cutting edge of interior design.

tiffany hanging lamps

The array of Tiffany-inspired lighting is almost mind-boggling. Tall floor lamps are a popular choice to match the smaller table lamp, or to simply stand on its own. There is also plenty of ceiling lighting that has been touched by the Tiffany magic. Flush and semi-flush mounts often feature detailed stained glass shades, and chandeliers and pendants can be found that also feature Tiffany-inspired themes. If you’re in the market for a new lamp, or if you’re tired of your current light fixtures, consider a beautiful new Tiffany lamp.
